I have high cholesterol?!?!?!

But I am only 27!

So, I got the letter from my doctor. It said I have to avoid egg yokes, dairy and red meat.

Steak shouldn’t be hard, but pork is my favorite! NO FAIR!
Egg yokes? Do you realize how many things they put egg yokes in? Pasta, just to name one! This means I can’t even eat lemon bars, omelets, eggs benedict, hollandaise, and a lot of other foods I love.

And dairy? Are you kidding me? Dairy? Cheese? Cottage cheese? Butter? Yogurt? Ice cream? Sour cream? DID I MENTION CHEESE????

I am in hell.

Cottage cheese is the devils elixir.

I could never go without cheese and eggs. Poor thing.

Oh my God I would die. Seriously. I LIVE on dairy. I drink a gallon of milk every two days for crying out loud! Nevermind all the cheese in my diet! Some form of dairy is in everything I eat. I'm devestated FOR you.

Thank you for your kind words. I haven’t exactly been strictly sticking to the diet. I do have a bit of dairy now and then. Cheese will be my down fall.

That's horrible! I don't know that you need to avoid dairy entirely, but I'd try to move to the lower fat versions. But that totally sucks.

I live in terror of being told that I have high cholesterol. I'm still in the good range, but I would not be happy if I was given those dietary instructions. Poor lizy. :(

NO RED MEAT? Holy Cow... LOL

Okay, bad joke. I agree with esther, there are low fat alternatives out there so you don't have to give up everything you love completely. Just become a label reader, and I bet you do just fine.

oh my lizy...so sorry. but seriously, no yogurt? and aren't there cheeses that are lower in the bad fats? did they mention about exercise helping to lower it? or any of the newer meds?

WTF??

The no red meat part is great, but everything else is terrible. Can't you just eat oatmeal?

Lizy,

Good luck, I to was told a young age to avoid dairy, but I love it to much to avoid it, I can tell you everything in Moderation will be your key to success with this crusade. An additional benefit I found when I can abstain from Dairy, I tend to lose a few pounds. Good luck.

Well, dear readers, thanks for the advice and support. For the most part, I already make good choices regarding my food. I was eating a lot of dairy, though. Always low fat and non-fat when I could find it. Unfortunately, genetics is my undoing. Damn!

Well, I will keep up on it and try to do my best. Cheerios and oatmeal, here I come!

Y'know ... I was in the same place on you like eight years ago. I made a good faith effort to change my diet, I really did. But the only long-term change I made really was switching to skim milk. (I did get back into exercising, too).

But anyway, so I still had high cholesterol ... so now I just take Crestor. Easiest thing in the world, just a pill a day. (It costs me about $100 for a three-month supply, not too bad).

Anyway, I'm not saying don't eat right. But I think in my case it was more about genetics than a poor diet, even though I don't eat totally healthy.

Darren, I think you're being foolish. Cholesterol tests are cheap, you can buy one at the drug store. Heart attack is a leading cause of death, if you can reduce your chances of that you'll likely live into your 80s.

p.s. - found this blog through finy's, ain't she great?
